What finishing is meant to do
Drywall finishing deals with joints, fasteners, and the surface around them before decoration. The goal is a surface suited to the intended finish. A wall that will receive texture may need a different preparation from one that will have a smooth appearance.
Smooth and textured are different choices
Smooth walls have a restrained look, while texture adds a visible pattern to the surface. When repairing an existing wall, first decide whether you want the repair to blend with that pattern or whether you are discussing a broader change to the room. Bring a close-up photo of the existing finish.
Why lighting changes what you see
Light coming across a wall from the side can reveal variations that are less obvious under soft, even lighting. Paint with more sheen can make surface differences easier to see. Talk about the room’s windows and planned paint before deciding on the finish.
Understanding finish levels
Industry finish levels describe preparation before decoration. Level 4 is commonly associated with many flat-paint applications. Level 5 adds a skim coat across the surface and is considered where demanding lighting or certain paint finishes make uniformity especially important. The appropriate specification depends on the whole system; these terms are not a promise that a particular level is included in every repair.
Agree on the handoff to painting
Ask whether the planned work ends with sanding, priming, or painting. A finished drywall surface still needs the preparation and coatings suited to the chosen paint. Clear expectations make it easier to compare scopes and avoid assuming that every stage is included.
Does every room need Level 5 finishing?
No. The intended appearance, coating, and lighting influence the appropriate finish. Discuss the room and expected result before choosing a scope.
